Mariners already in long-term negotiations with Bedard
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners have already started discussing a long-term deal with Erik Bedard.
Bedard has filed for $8 million with a counter offer from the Orioles of $6 million in the upcoming arbitration hearing. The Mariners would have Bedard for two more seasons, but it appears that they are already working on a deal that would extend him beyond that.
Representatives of Bedard said the Orioles never made an effort in trying to extend Bedard, but Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said that wasn’t the case; it was just that Bedard didn’t want to stay in Baltimore.
“I made an inquiry early with Erik’s representatives,” MacPhail said. “They were polite, but I certainly got the sense that their preference at the current time was to take it on a short-term basis.”
