Mike Sweeney accepts minor league deal with A’s

Mike Sweeney, long from his all-star days in Kansas City, has found a hard time getting a major league job on the open market this off-season. Coming off two seasons impacted greatly by injury, Sweeney has had to take a pay cut from the $11 million he has received each year for the last five seasons, to not even having a guaranteed contract going into Spring Training.
With Oakland, Sweeney will probably find most of his playing time against lefties at either first base or as a designated hitter, but with a lineup loaded with left handed hitters, he shouldn’t struggle too mightily to find at bats. He could relieve any of Daric Barton, Jack Cust and Dan Johnson in order to get some playing time.
