Rockies sign Atkins, Hawpe to one-year deals
According to the Denver Post, the Colorado Rockies and Garrett Atkins have agreed to a one-year, $4.38 million deal. Atkins had submitted $4.65 million through arbitration, while the Rockies countered with an offer of $4.125 million. The two parties settled at the mid-point.
Atkins can earn an additional $92,500 through incentives, earning the full amount if he he reaches 700 plate appearances. He could also earn $50,000 for the Silver Slugger and $25,000 for making the All-Star Team.
Atkins isn’t the only one the Rockies are wrapping up before going to a hearing. The club also came to terms on a one-year deal with outfielder Brad Hawpe. The Rocky Mountain News reports the deal is worth $4.74 million, but that seems odd considering Hawpe only asked for $4.35 million during arbitration. The Rockies countered with $3.575 million.
Both Atkins and Hawpe were eligible for arbitration for the first time.
After signing Atkins and Hawpe, Brian Fuentes would be the team’s lone remaining arbitration eligible player. The Rockies are expecting to go to a hearing over Fuentes, as they are miles apart in the figures exchanged. Fuentes asked for $6.5 million through arbitration, with the team submitting a figure of $5.05 million.
