Tony Armas signs minor league deal with Mets

The New York Mets signed Tony Armas Jr. to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Much like the Mientkiewicz signing, this screams strange. Knowing it would be hard to break camp in anyone’s starting rotation, Armas didn’t exactly choose to place himself in a good situation to make a team.

The only thing he has going for him in New York is an aging Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez. His only chance to make the Mets rotation out of Spring Training is for one of them to suffer an injury during Spring Training, and even then, the Mets may choose to make a trade before leaving camp with Armas in their rotation.
