Astros looking at Shawn Chacon
Astros general manager Ed Wade has confirmed that the team has made an offer to right-hander Shawn Chacon, but has yet to hear back from Chacon’s agent. It appears there is interest coming out of both sides, however, it is still unclear as to where the two sides stand on getting a deal in place. Any final agreement would hinge on Chacon passing a physical. “I’m talking to his agent but we haven’t reached any agreement yet,” Wade said.
Chacon would give the Astros a pitcher who is versatile enough to handle either a starting or relief role, though he would prefer to start. The Astros have a few holes in their starting rotation, so this would seem to be a good fit. With the Astros completing a trade for Oscar Villarreal earlier in the off-season, it wouldn’t be likely that Chacon would be placed in the bullpen as a long reliever, as that is the role that Villarreal excelled at in Atlanta.
