Dodgers sign Mark Sweeney to one-year deal

UPDATE (2-12-08; 11:47 AM): Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the expected deal between the Dodgers and Mark Sweeney is complete. The contract is reportedly worth something in the neighborhood of $600,000, but includes a $125,000 bonus if he makes the Opening Day roster. There are additional incentives that could make the deal worth $900,000.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com is reporting that the Dodgers are moving closer to re-signing Mark Sweeney to a one-year contract.

“It’s not a done deal, but we’re moving in the right direction,” said Sweeney’s agent, Barry Axelrod.

Sweeney will serve the role of being a veteran bat off the bench, and he’s been one of the best to ever fill that role, second only to Lenny Harris in career pinch hits.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise with Tony Clark off the board. The Dodgers were said to be interested in Clark and Sweeney, but with Clark signing with the Padres, it was only a matter of time before the Dodgers and Sweeney agreed to a contract of some sort.
