Livan Hernandez signs with the Twins
The Minnesota Twins and Livan Hernandez have agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract. His deal could grow to the $7 million he earned last season with the Diamondbacks by meeting certain performance-based incentives. Hernandez would’ve gotten all of the $7 million in guaranteed form if he’d accepted the Diamondbacks offer of arbitration. Instead, with Hernandez being a Type B free agent, the Diamondbacks will get a draft pick from Minnesota as compensation.
The Twins signed Hernandez citing the need for a veteran presence in their rotation, however, they didn’t want to sign a veteran unless the felt it would make the team better. They looked back to last year with Ramon Ortiz and Sidney Ponson for all the reminder they needed in signing a veteran for the sake of signing one. However, Hernandez will provide the Twins with a lot of innings, taking some of the pressure off the young guys in the rotation to perform. With Johan Santana and Carlos Silva moving to other cities, the team had a lot of innings to replace in their rotation.
They’re hoping the addition of Hernandez and the return of Francisco Liriano can accomplish just that.
