Marlins reach ballpark agreement
The Florida Marlins, the city of Miami, Miami-Dade County, and Major League Baseball have reportedly reached an agreement to finance a $515 million ballpark at the site of the Orange Bowl. The only thing left is for the city and county commissioners to approve such agreement, which should occur on Thursday as both commissions will meet.
The Marlins agreement calls for $360 million to be contributed by the city and county, mainly in tourist taxes, and a $50 million general obligation bond Miami-Dade voters approved in 2004 to renovate the Orange Bowl, but will now be used in the new ballpark project instead of the scheduled renovations. The Marlins are to contribute $155 million.
If approved, the Marlins would be renamed the Miami Marlins when they open their new ballpark on 2011 Opening Day.
