Sheffield not likely to see much time in outfield

Jim Leyland stated today that he doesn’t foresee a lot of time in the outfield for Gary Sheffield, at least not early in the season, due to his past shoulder injuries.

“I don’t expect Sheffield to play in the outfield much, particularly in the start [of the season],” Leyland said. “I want Sheffield to be ready to hit, and I’m not going to do anything to jeopardize that off the bat. He likes to play the outfield, but I have to watch that shoulder and make sure we can maximize his offensive skills.”

There is a thought that Sheffield and Magglio Ordonez may alternate between designated hitter and right field throughout the season, but right now it’s looking like Sheffield will primarily be a designated hitter.
