The Unit on pace to return from surgery

In his first bullpen session of Spring Training, Randy Johnson impressed Diamondbacks’ manager Bob Melvin with his ability to locate his pitches after having his season come to an end due to back surgery a year ago.

Johnson threw 27 pitches during the Sunday session with wht appeared to be his normal delivery.

“From the first pitch, he was throwing bullets right out of bed again,” Melvin said. “His location was unbelievable.”

Johnson is going to err on the side of caution while working up to full steam. He’s to take three days off and throw again on Thursday, upping it to 30 pitches and progressing from there.

“In my situation, we have to be careful what we add. As of this point, I’m on pace with everybody else and on Thursday we’ll throw off a mound again and be ready to hopefully throw a batting practice when that time comes,” Johnson said of his progress.
