Cardinals eying Weaver, Colon

With Matt Clement’s status for Opening Day in doubt, the St. Louis Cardinals are having to look for backup options. With time running thin, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has spoken with representatives for Jeff Weaver and Bartolo Colon.

No deal is believed to be imminent, but the Cardinals are looking at adding one of the two on a minor league contract as they find out more about the status of Clement. With the Cardinals having more than one pitcher already suffering from the injury bug (Clement, Mulder, Carpenter), it would probably make the most sense for the team to look into bringing Jeff Weaver back to town.

Weaver was acquired by the Cardinals in 2006 after being dumped by the Angels and helped guide them to a World Series title. After the season was over, Weaver turned down the Cardinals offer for a two-year contract to head west and accept a one-year deal from the Mariners in hopes to turn it into a larger contract in 2008 and beyond. After struggling in 2007, Weaver finds himself in search of a job with just weeks before Opening Day.

Weaver’s most recent success came in St. Louis under the tutelage of Dave Duncan and the Cardinals need another arm. Seems to be the recipe for a good fit if you asked me.
