Ryan Howard won his arbitration case against the Phillies on Thursday. Howard asked for, and received, a $10 million salary, while the Phillies had submitted an offer for $7 million. The $3 million gap was the largest among the figures exchanged this year.
With Howard winning his arbitration case, he now owns the largest salary in the history of baseball for first-year arbitration eligible players.
The Phillies should have just paid him the money up front and avoided this entire situation. Now they’re out the money and have a potential situation that could lead to some animosity between the club and their superstar.
