It’s just Manny being Manny

With free agency looming, Manny Ramirez has reportedly switched agents and will now be represented by Scott Boras. The Red Sox could keep Manny in town without the fear of losing him to free agency by exercising his $20 million option for 2009 if they chose to do so.

Yesterday, Manny spoke to reporters about his contract situation and gave the hint that he’d like to stay in Boston, but wouldn’t be upset if they declined his option and allowed him to test the free agent market.

With Boras at the helm, it’s almost a lock that the pair will look for top dollar on the market, but at the same time, that doesn’t count Boston out. The Red Sox have the funds and a good working relationship with Boras, as he has several clients already on the Red Sox roster. However, it’s hard to fathom a scenario in which the Red Sox would decline the $20 million option, which would also give them a $20 million option for 2010, and still try to re-sign him.
