Leyland impressed by Jones

When big-time hitters move to Comerica Park and the Detroit Tigers, questions always seem to pop up about how their numbers will translate to the spacious park. However, when gap hitters, like Jacque Jones and Edgar Renteria move to Comerica, people always start envisioning doubles turning to triples in gaps that seem to never end.

If you ask Jim Leyland, that’s just what you’ll see out of Jacque Jones in 2008.

He hit a lot of doubles, but he played at Wrigley Field,” said Leyland. “A lot of the doubles he hit there will become triples in our ballpark.”

With all the fire power added to the Tigers team over the winter, you may forget that Jacque Jones was even acquired by the Tigers. However, despite being looked over, Leyland thinks that Jones is going to be a big addition to the Tigers lineup.

“I think Jacque Jones is going to have a big year for us,” Leyland said Friday. “He’s quietly going to be a tremendous addition. I like what I’ve seen so far.”
