Reds sign Patterson, Hairston

John Fay is reporting that the Cincinnati Reds signed Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston Jr. to minor-league deals. Both could factor into the center field position if the team feels Jay Bruce needs more seasoning in the minor leagues.

“Patterson will come in and compete for the center field job,” Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said. “Hairston is another versatile guy that can play infield/outfield. They’ve got some experience, but we gave them no guarantees. They’ll come in and compete.”

With Patterson now in the fold, the likely scenario would have Bruce returning to the minors.  Baker has a history with Patterson and a long reputation for going more on the veteran side than with the youngsters.  This will also allow the team to have every reason not to believe they rush their star prospect to the majors.

  1. Time to kick back and watch Baker screw up another team.
