Colon close to rotation?

After a strong bullpen session on Monday, the Red Sox are thinking Bartolo Colon may be closer to their rotation than originally hoped. Colon threw 42 pitches in 11 minutes, mixing in changeups with his fastball during the final half of the session.

Colon is expected to throw another bullpen session on Wednesday, and that session will be the judge as to whether or not he throws another bullpen or is able to then face batters in batting practice. He’ll be cleared to mix in his breaking ball after one more time off the mound.

Pitching coach John Farrell is extremely pleased with the work, saying he’s much farther along than the team had anticipated.

“I think he is,” Farrell said. “When we get into live situations, we’ll get a much better and more accurate read on his readiness for the regular season but at this point, the progress he’s made has been very positive.”
