Mets, Maine talking long-term

New York Mets pitcher John Maine is one of few players who took their renewal in stride, saying he’s just thankful for what he has. Maine was renewed at $450,000 for 2008, just a $59,000 raise as the pitcher comes off a 15-win season.

“I’m thankful for everything I make in this league,” Maine said. “It’s still a lot of money, and I’m grateful to the Mets. That’s just the type of person I am. I’m lucky to be doing this for a living.”

Maine is hoping he will have the opportunity to sign a multi-year contract before he enters the arbitration process after the 2008 season, and a source told the New York Post that those negotiations are already underway.
