Mets seeking backups

With the rash of injuries experienced in Spring Training, the Mets are in the market for backups. The team is focusing on acquiring two pieces: a right handed hitter who can play both first base and right field, and a middle infielder who can play a solid shortstop.

The group of players the Mets are dangling to fill these roles are pitchers Orlando Hernandez, Scott Schoeneweis, Joe Smith and Jorge Sosa. They are also willing to trade Anderson Hernandez and were considering Ruben Gotay in that list before he went down to an injury, too.

The Mets are looking for a right handed complement to both Carlos Delgado and Ryan Church. The team could turn to Angel Pagan and Damion Easley, but they’re looking to upgrade beyond that.
