Rosenthal on Matt Holliday

Ken Rosenthal states that $18 million annually is likely to be the Rockies limit for signing Matt Holliday long-term.

Rosenthal thinks Miguel Cabrera’s expected extension with the Tigers will set the bar for the Rockies and Holliday. Holliday, a Scott Boras client, has said that he may not be looking for top dollar, just a competitive offer. It remains unknown if that will remain the case with Boras pulling the strings, who almost always searches for full market value.

Miguel Cabrera has one more year of arbitration available to the Tigers before having to lock him up, but it is expected that Cabrera will command $20 million, and maybe more, per season when he signs his next contract.

If that’s the case, $18 million for Holliday would seem about right. While Holliday may have better career numbers than Cabrera, Holliday has done his work in Coors Field while Cabrera has been in Dolphin Stadium, a very good pitchers’ park.

A salary of $18 million per season would put Holliday right there with Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells and Andruw Jones in terms of salary, but the Rockies aren’t going to go beyond that for fear that they strike another Mike Hampton or Denny Neagle.
