Dodgers third base job becomes more clear after injuries
In today’s 6-4 loss to the Cardinals, both of the candidates for the Dodgers third base job were sent to the training room.
Nomar Garciaparra was hit on the wrist in his second at bat — he homered in the first — of the game. Andy LaRoche was hit on his throwing hand when Danny Ardoin attempted to pick off a base runner. The throw hit him between the thumb and index finger, leaving the area swollen.
The team has received good news on Nomar, whose X-Rays came back negative. While Nomar is listed as day-to-day, he is not expected to travel to Jupiter tomorrow as the Dodgers take on the Cardinals again.
The team didn’t receive such good news on LaRoche, however. LaRoche has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb and will need surgery. He’s expected to miss 8 to 10 weeks. LaRoche’s injury all but guarantees Nomar of securing the starting third base job, barring any trade the team should make.
