Mets have no interest in Bonds

On Friday, Buster Olney wrote that the New York Mets should consider signing Barry Bonds. Olney thinks that it would be a good move to help fill the injury problem and upgrade the offense. He mentions the poor defense from Bonds, but wonders if it would really be any worse than Moises Alou’s defense in left field?

Olney hits it on the head when he says that Bonds would only cost the team money, meaning they wouldn’t have to trade prospects to get him. After their off-season trades, the Mets minor league system is bare and they don’t have anything but excess relief pitchers to trade.

Today, an article in the New York Daily News reports that the Mets “laughed off” reports that they would have interest in Bonds.

But asked last night if there is any remote merit to stories suggesting a pursuit of controversial slugger Barry Bonds is possible, a high-ranking Mets official insisted there is no interest in taking on the monumental baggage - which includes charges of perjury and obstruction of justice - stemming from the out-of-work home run king’s involvement in baseball’s ongoing steroids mess.
