Stark’s latest: Giants, Orioles, Lohse, Lofton

Jayson Stark has a new blog up and it’s chalked full of rumors. Let’s see what he’s got…

  • Stark starts with the Giants, saying that the team is shopping a large portion of their roster. He mentions Rich Aurilia, Ray Durham, Steve Kline, Randy Winn and Tyler Walker as possible veterans on the move, along with some young players like Rajai Davis and Merkin Valdez, one of the Giants best pitching prospects before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
  • He says that one baseball source predicts that the Orioles and Cubs will finally complete the trade for Brian Roberts around the end of March. He mentions Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno and at least one other prospect for Roberts and Jay Payton as the most likely package.
  • Still on the Orioles, Stark mentions that they have been telling other teams that they will add “at least one more” veteran to their rotation before Opening Day. He does the translation for us and says Kyle Lohse is the main target, pending the contractual wishes of Scott Boras.
  • Kenny Lofton has been getting interest from the Tampa Bay Rays. With Rocco Baldelli still not well enough to play the field and Jonny Gomes not an option as an every day outfielder, Stark suggests that Lofton may find a home with the Rays if their outfield doesn’t fix itself within the next few weeks.
