Cubs up offer for Roberts
The latest rumor out of Chicago reports that the Cubs have upped their offer to the Orioles as they try to move the Brian Roberts trade talks along.
The new offer is said to be infielder Ronny Cedeno and three pitching prospects — Jose Ceda, Sean Gallagher and Donnie Veal — as part of the package for Brian Roberts. The Chicago Sun-Times is also reporting that the trade could be expanded to include Jason Marquis on the Cubs side with Jay Payton going with Roberts to Chicago.
With that package, the Orioles would receive a shortstop that may be able to step in and play right away with Miguel Tejada going to Houston. If not at shortstop, where they have a defensive first shortstop in Luis Hernandez already in place, Cedeno may be able to get some playing time at second base as the Orioles will have to fill the spot occupied by Roberts. The Orioles would also receive the Cubs three top pitching prospects in the trade.
