White Sox waive Uribe

According to the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox placed infielder Juan Uribe on waivers today.

Uribe had been the White Sox starting shortstop for the last three seasons, but lost his job when the team traded Jon Garland for Orlando Cabrera earlier in the off-season. He was among those fighting for the every day second base job for the White Sox this spring, which now appears to have Alexei Ramirez serving as the lead candidate.

The Tribune speculates that the placement of Uribe on waivers is just a ploy to see what teams are interested in the middle infielder. Uribe is to be owed $4.5 million for the 2008 season, and while the waiver process has not been confirmed by the White Sox, it seems that any of the other 29 major league teams could now lay claim on Uribe, but would have to assume all financial obligations.

The Baltimore Orioles may be a team that jumps to the top of the list of suitors for Uribe. They are currently without a major league shortstop on their 40-man roster, along with a possible opening at second base just weeks away.
