Wainwright set to sign long-term

Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals are expected to sign a long-term contract at some point today that could lock him up through 2013. The contract is currently pending a physical that Wainwright had on Wednesday, which shouldn’t be too difficult to pass considering every major league player undergoes a physical to start spring training, anyway.

The Cardinals have been talking to Wainwright’s representatives for “several weeks” about a multi-year deal, leading to the renewal of his 2008 contract.

The guaranteed portion of his new contract is four years in length and expected to be worth $15 million. The contract will buy out Wainwright’s arbitration years and has an option included that would cover the first two years of his free agency if exercised.
