Pettitte may miss first start
Andy Pettitte’s back may keep him from making his first start of the season. He says his back was well enough to play catch on Saturday, but didn’t, and then couldn’t throw on Sunday.
He is scheduled to start for the Yankees on Thursday, which would mark his first time pitching since March 17. Pettitte has pitched just eight innings this spring.
If he can’t pitch on Thursday, it may put his first start of the season in doubt, which is just ten days away now on April 2. If he can’t pitch Thursday, he may be able to pitch in a minor league game on Friday.
“I was really feeling pretty good (Saturday) night and feeling good about what (Sunday) was going to bring. But I woke up (Sunday) morning and it was kind of tight on me again. I’ve already lost two days I don’t want to set it back again,” Pettitte said. “I doubt I’ll pitch on Thursday, it may be pushed back to Friday.”
Pettitte still believes he can make his first start on April 2, but the Yankees are going to be “overly cautious” with Pettitte if he doesn’t appear ready to throw 90+ pitches in the first week of games.
