Pirates to buy out Kim’s contract
The Pirates signed Byung-Hyun Kim to be their primary setup man in late February, but the Pirates organization has been disappointed since the contract was signed. Kim reportedly took five days to sign the deal after the agreement was in place, then needed two more weeks to get his arm in shape. The disappointments surrounding Kim are likely what is going into his release.
The two week layoff didn’t help him much, as when he got on the mound this spring, he’s pitched to a 14.40 ERA, giving up five homeruns in five innings.
Kim was scheduled to pitch in yesterday’s game against the Twins, but after telling the coaching staff that he was feeling ill, he was given permission to leave the field, leaving him unable to pitch that afternoon. By leaving, Kim blew what would have been his last chance to impress the Pirates management.
The Pirates will buyout his $850,000 contract for $300,000 at some point today.
