Reds cut Mike Stanton

Dusty Baker announced this morning that the Cincinnati Reds have told Mike Stanton that they’re going to release him. The decision will cost the team $3 million this season and $500,000 in 2009 as they will have to eat Stanton’s contract.

Wayne Krivsky, Reds general manager, did not go into specifics when talking about Stanton, but did confirm Baker’s announcement.

“Whatever Dusty told you is good enough for me. But nothing official has happened we don’t have to do those kinds of things until Monday,” Krivsky said.

This news means we’ll have to wait to see if it’s an outright release or a DFA situation. If it turns out to be an outright release, the Phillies would be likely suitors, as they have been trying to trade for the left hander. If it is a DFA situation, the Phillies and Reds could still work out a Helms-Stanton swap for ten more days.
