Nationals activate Cordero, Pena
Chad Cordero will be activated from the disabled list prior to Sunday’s game against the Braves. However, in a somewhat surprising move, Jason Bergmann was sent to Triple-A to make room for him.
Bergmann was brought in for a relief assignment on Saturday in an attempt to build his confidence in a blowout game. That didn’t work as he gave up four runs in two innings, including back-to-back homers from Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann. He was in line to start on Tuesday, but that spot in the rotation will be skipped due to an off-day, allowing them to send him down. Shawn Hill will probably have returned from the disabled list to take Bergmann’s spot in the rotation when it comes back around.
They’ll also activate Wily Mo Pena from the disabled list before the game on Sunday. Pena went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in his brief rehab stint for Triple-A Columbus. In Pena’s absence, Nationals left fielders have combined for a .184 average and have yet to hit an extra base hit on the season. Nationals left fielders are sporting a 31 OPS+ so far. Needless to say, Pena’s bat will be a welcomed addition to the lineup, despite the fact it will probably strikeout more times than not.
