Cubs recall Murton, demote Patterson

The Chicago Cubs have recalled outfielder Matt Murton from Triple-A in an effort to provide more right handed hitting off their bench. They sent Eric Patterson down to make room for Murton.

“We’re going to be playing teams with lefthanders [in their rotation] and quite a few lefties in their bullpens, so this gives us a righthanded bat off the bench,” manager Lou Piniella said Saturday. “At the same time, if I want to rest [Mark] DeRosa or [Kosuke] Fukudome, Murton can play. Murton has experience and success at the major league level and can hit both righthanders and lefthanders.”

The Cubs brought Patterson up earlier in the week when Alfonso Soriano was placed on the disabled list. He went 0-for-6 in his brief three game stint in the majors.
