Hughes out with fractured rib

Philip Hughes was initially placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle. Turns out to be much worse for the young Yankees, right hander. Hughes will be sidelined until at least July with a stress fracture of the ninth rib on his right side.

It appears that Hughes was initially hurt last Thursday. He woke up Friday with “a little bit of discomfort” in his side after having thrown two innings the day before. Hughes pitched again on Tuesday and was still feeling the discomfort, but tried to downplay the significance of the injury.

It wasn’t until an MRI done on Hughes today did the Yankees know they were dealing with a serious injury. The Yankees are going to shut Hughes down for at least four weeks before he is re-evaluated.
